Flap Procedure for Gum Disease
When a gum disease damages the tooth and bone and not cures by antibiotics, root planning, scaling then a gum surgeon or periodontist performs a flap surgery. A periodonist numb the area by local anesthesia and work on the gums, dentist pull back the gum, clean the roots of teeth and repair damaged bone. Gum flap sewn back into its place then covered with a gauze piece for stop the bleeding.
Bone may be:
1). Smooth the bone and reshaped so that plaque has no places to grow.
2). Repaired or Grafted the bone from another part of body or with other materials.
3). May place lining on grafted bone, to help the bone grow back. Lining may need removed later.
What To Expect After Surgery
Generally patient need only few for recovery from flap surgery. These are some impotents things which a patient need and perform at home itself, if you have any questions or doubts then directly call to dentist.
1). Take prescribed painkillers.
2). After 24 hours of surgery , patient can rinse mouth gently with luke warm salted water several times a day, it reduce swelling, give relief from pain.
3). Relax after surgery.
4).Change gauze pieces.
5). Eat soft foods such as gelatin, pudding, or light soup.
6). Do not lie flat. This may prolong bleeding. Prop up head with pillows.
7). Brush your teeth and tongue carefully.
8). Apply an ice pack, outside of your mouth its gives you relief from pain, swelling.
9). Do not smoke.
